Eating disorders are still amongst the world’s biggest health concerns. Eating disorders still appear to be more common among women than men, particular younger women.
Anorexia Nervosa is the most commonly known of the Eating disorders. Signs of this disorder can include obsessive compulsive tendencies to over-exercise, exhibition of very self-conscious behaviours and little food consumption. Self-esteem issues can arise and contribute significantly to the worsening of the disorder.
Bulimia Nervosa is the second most commonly known of the Eating disorders. People who have this disorder will be seen going through moments of quick food consumption followed by periods of purging through self-induced vomiting, excessive laxative intake or other methods. Many people suffering with Anorexia also suffer from Bulimia which burdens the person further with overall poorer health.
With the global fight against obesity on the rise, people are now becoming more aware of another kind of Eating disorder. This is called Compulsive Overeating. People who are compulsive overeaters use food to fill some sort of void in their lives. They will also feel shame for their appearance and suffer from a tremendous lack of self-esteem.
If someone in your life is experiencing any of these symptoms, encourage them to seek or obtain medical help immediately. There are also large numbers of community Eating disorder support groups that can help provide resources and assistance.
